Hardy Thames is a veteran history and government teacher on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. For years he has taught Dual-Credit U.S. History alongside AP U.S. Government and Politics and AP Comparative Government and Politics — courses built on a simple conviction: students remember how power actually works far longer than they remember a list of dates.

His writing reaches past his own titles. He is a contributing author to A People’s Curriculum for the Earth and The Freedom Writers Diary Teacher’s Guide, and his article “Looking for Justice at Turkey Creek,” published in Rethinking Schools, took his students out of the classroom and into the fight over a historic African American community on the Mississippi coast.
